This day program is about ten thousand square feet, and will include an indoor basketball court with score boards. It will also have an outdoor court and shelter. There will be offices in the front and a reception area. This building will also include plenty of parking for staff, trianees, and visitors. We will have a huge conference room that will be ideal for trianings, staff meatings, and conferences.

As some of you may know, March is Traumatic Brain Injury awareness month. We recently posted a link to a story on our Facebook and Twitter accounts that includes some alarming new statistics recently published by the Center for Disease Control. The article states that the CDC reports that approximately 1.7 million traumatic brain injuries occur each year in the United States alone. These brain injuries result in death, hospitalization, and emergency room visits. Nearly 80% of the people in these finds survived and are now living with the effects brain injury.

The reason that this is so significant is that the road to recovery from brain injury is not always easy and, to be honest, is usually quite difficult on the survivor, as well as his family, friends, associates, etc. With roughly 3brain injuries occurring each minute somewhere across the nation, it is important that quality services be affordable and accessible.

While we typically don’t want this blog to be an advertisement for services, we would like to reach out to brain injury survivors and families in this month of increasing TBI awareness. If we at Community Opportunities can be of any assistance in starting on the path to recovery, please contact us.

Exciting things are happening for us here at Community Opportunities. With the launch of this beautifully redesigned website and blog (Kudos to our friends at The Center for Rural Development), we are anticipating many upcoming changes that will totally enhance the quality of the services we provide.

If you take a few minutes to peruse our new website, you’ll find detailed explanations of all the services we provide and have a chance to view some of the homes and facilities that we operate. You’ll also find news briefs (which will be updated on a regular basis) and links to employment opportunities. Here on this blog, you can expect regular updates from our staff, clients, and family members, as they express their opinions about their personal and professional values. Expect postings about self-advocacy, life in the community, and brain injury prevention.

We’re also proud to announce that the facility to house our day programs and therapy supports, which is currently under construction, is nearing completion. In addition, we’re continually growing in the services we provide to clients and are looking forward to a future of ever-evolving supports and development.

We welcome you to look around our site and send us feedback to contact@communityopportunities.net or find us on Facebook or Twitter. And check back here often for news, stories, and voices from the community of clients that we consider family.

Until next time,
Justin Smith, Executive Director

Clients in the Acquired Brain Injury Long-Term Care (ABI-LTC) waiver now have additional services available to them when they choose to receive supports from Community Opportunities. The relatively new ABI-LTC waiver program offers nursing services to recipients who qualify and Community Opportunities is proud to provide such supports for those who need them.

The agency currently employs one Registered Nurse and two Licensed Practical Nurses who oversee all nursing supports and systems of medication administration. The nursing team is comprised of Sherry Jeffers, RN, Shonda Miller, LPN, and Trent Logan, LPN, all of whom provide direct-care, assessments, and recommendations to clients in the ABI-LTC waiver. Members of the nursing team also assist with client education and staff training as needed.

“The addition of nursing services is just another step in our agency’s overall journey toward providing the highest quality of supports possible,” said Justin Smith, Executive Director. “We have a great team of medical professionals who truly care for each client’s health and well-being and are dedicated to ensuring that each person is healthy holistically in order to have a happy, meaningful life in the community.”

Clients in the ABI-LTC waiver are not the only ones who benefit from the agency’s addition of nursing services. Supports, supervision, and general assessments of overall health and welfare are also provided to all clients as needed, regardless of waiver program.

Construction crews continue to finalize the construction of the new building which will house all of the agency’s day program services. The new 10,000 square feet building will be home to the Adult Day Training program for clients in the Supports for Community Living waiver and the Structured Day Program for those in the Acquired Brain Injury waivers.
